What Size do you need?

There are many aspects you can consider to help you decide what size water tank suits your purposes. All the these factors contribute to help determine the size tank you should consider.

  • How much room do you have?
  • Do you have a tight narrow spot or other limitations?
  • What is the water catchment area (that is what is the size of your roof)?
  • How much do you want to spend?
  • What is the primary purpose of the water? Is it for just for a vegetable garden or a Australian Native Bush style garden? Do you want to wash the car and hose down the house. Maybe you want to use your rain water to flush the toilet and provide water for your washing machine. Any & all of these have different requirements.
  • Another important consideration is the council or shire requirements/limitations of your local area! Some councils require a application for larger size tanks and/or specific distances from fence etc.
How much water do I collect off my roof?

To calculate the amount of water you catch is really quite simple:

1mm of rain falling on 1m2 of roof = 1 litre of water

For example if you have a area of 24m x 4m feeding into your tank. It rains recording 3mm. So your calculations is 24 x 4 = 96, now times this by 3mm = 288 litres of water went in with just a little rainfall.

How much water does my family use? It really depends on what you use the water for. For a family of 3 that want to use  2 toilets and to water the garden with a relatively conservative use, they need 20,000 litres per month. If a family of 4 their tank for the washing machine & 2 toilets they will most likely need 27,000 litres per month and if you include watering the garden in this last household then it goes upto 38,000 litres per month. Of course it is determined by how conservative you are and what type of garden etc you have.

The average family of four uses 900 litres of water per day. Since Water restrictions have been in place Sydney residents have reduced this to 700 litres per day or 21,000 litres per month.

Installing a 5000-litre rainwater tank in every Sydney home might put off the need for a new dam for up to 84 years
